About Meleani Bates

I am Meleani Bates, M.A. (she/they), Founder and Lead Equity Strategist of Deliberate Consultancy. I am a first-generation professional, queer, neurodivergent, light-skinned, cis, Black woman of African ancestry and Jamaican heritage. Born into intergenerational poverty and now well-resourced. I am a Black Feminist committed to naming and challenging imperialist white supremacist heteropatriarchy, as bell hooks urges us all to do. My lived experiences deeply shape how I show up as an equity scholar-practitioner and as a human.

My work consistently centers liberation, intersectionality, belonging, and a critical analysis of power principles that guide my approach to facilitate organizational change to expand access for those most impacted by systemic inequities.

I hold a Master of Arts degree from Lewis & Clark College, along with Bachelor of Science degrees in African American Studies and Women Studies from Oregon State University. Across all my professional roles, I continue to be recognized for my trusted leadership, strategic planning, project management, and my unwavering dedication to building systems where liberation and belonging are not aspirational but expected.

My Equity Praxis

Deliberate Consultancy partners with organizations to achieve sustained, embodied equity work, focusing on liberation-centered strategies to normalize shared equity leadership and cultivate systems where belonging is practiced, not promised. My approach is rooted in dialogue that disrupts harm and nurtures possibility, moving beyond performative gestures to reshape systems, relationships, and possibilities for the future. I offer trusted subject matter expertise and guidance across four key areas: Culture Change Strategy, Employee Engagement Strategy, equity Facilitation & Consultation, and tailored Equity Training, all designed to build just, inclusive, and resilient organizations.

In service to and held by Audre Lorde’s invitation to be deliberate and afraid of nothing,” my  consultancy is rooted in the deep belief that belonging is a birthright. Through deliberate action and courageous partnership, I support organizations in imagining and building the equitable systems and inclusive futures we all deserve.

My praxis is not static; it is an ongoing cycle of learning/unlearning, taking up accountability, and pursuing imagination. Guided by principles of intersectionality and collectivism, I approach organizational change as both a transformative practice and a shared responsibility. I work to illuminate inequities, disrupt harmful patterns, and cultivate cultures where people can thrive.

My praxis is fluid and evolving, grounded in reflection and shaped by the generational wisdom of those who have remained buoyant amid inequity. It is a commitment to transformation that extends beyond strategy into the daily rhythms of how we work, lead, and create new futures together.
